The ubiquitous Scarborough Reading Rope is familiar to virtually every professional concerned with the teaching of reading. It’s a useful model that constructively guides practice, but it presents only one half of the story: reading. Literacy is not just reading, but also writing.
The Language Literacy Network provides education professionals a more complete view of literacy. It mirrors much of the Reading Rope, with skilled writing presented as an integrated multi-component process. It extends beyond reading to reflect the reciprocal relationship of reading and writing and highlight the underlying language processes common to both.
